Hugoton cebrates two 100-year birthdays

Having a local resident live to be 100 years old is more than an individual milestone, it’s a chance to pause and appreciate how much can happen and change over the course of just one lifetime. It’s also a reflection on a community, where the support and, frankly, the health care would allow a person to live from, say, the Dust Bowl to self-driving cars.

Well Hugoton has not one, but two triple-digit birthdays coming up. Not just in the same year. In the same week. And both celebrations are being held in Hugoton.

The ever-so-slightly younger of the two is Betty Willis, who turns 100 years old on July 21. The second is Winifred Vore, who was born the next day, 100 years ago, July 22, 1926.

The birthday celebration honoring Betty will be Saturday, July 18, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Hugoton Senior Center in Hugoton. Betty’s family would be delighted to have members of the community stop by to wish her a happy birthday, share memories and celebrate the special occasion.

Whether you’ve known Betty for many years or simply want to help recognize a century of life well lived, you are warmly invited to attend. The family looks forward to celebrating this once-in-a-lifetime milestone with friends, neighbors, and the Hugoton community.

Vore, who was born Winifred Miller, is celebrating her 100th birthday on her actual birthday, Wednesday, July 22 in the Coffee Room at Pioneer Manor from 11 a.m. to noon. The public is welcome to stop by and visit and wish Winifred a happy 100th birthday.

Vore was a sister of Edna Kinser and Nellie Tool. She married Jack Vore who was a Hugoton coach back in 1934.
