Eagles qualify 16 for state track; boys take second at regional

The Hugoton High track team went to Andale on Friday, May 21 for regionals and returned with 16 state qualifiers in 17 events. The boys had the majority of the qualifiers with 10 boys making it in 12 different events. The boys finished second at regionals as a team.

The KSHSAA State Track & Field Championships take place May 29-30 at Cessna Stadium in Wichita, with the first field and running events starting at 7:45 a.m. Friday on the Wichita State campus.

Hugoton standout Adrian Adigun shined again at regionals, winning the triple jump and the long jump — the Eagles’ only two wins — and was part of two relays that also qualified for state, the 4×100 relay team, which placed sixth, and the 4×400 relay team, which placed second.

The Eagles’ had several other boys qualify for state in multiple events. Aquiles Aguilera qualified in both the shot put (2nd) and the discus (4th), Brandon Gomez made it in both the 1600 meter (3rd) and the 800 meter (6th), sprinter Sergio Tinoco qualified in the 100 meter (4th) and the 400 meter (second), as well as both relays with Adigun and David Gamez. Gamez also qualified in the long jump with a 4th-place finish.

The Hugoton girls’ best finishes were 4th in the 4×100 meter relay and Maddie Williams’ 4th in the javelin.
