Two qualify for state golf

Moscow freshman Lucas Howe and Hugoton sophomore Lane Stand have each qualified for state golf.

Howe became the first Moscow High student in school history to qualify for the Kansas State golf tournament when he shot a 90 Monday at the 1A sub-state tournament in Dodge City. He finished 11th.

Hugoton’s Stand qualified for state for the second straight year. He shot an 85 and finished 14th Tuesday at the 4A sub-state tournament at Cherry Oaks Golf Course in Cheney.

Stand, the son of Joe Stand and Kelly Frazier, came into the season as the Eagles’ No. 1 golfer after finishing sixth at the 4A sub-state in 2025 and qualifying for the state tournament as a freshman. He finished in sixth or better in all eight regular season tournaments this season, including wins at the Cimarron and Ulysses invitationals, and a second-place finish in the GWAC tournament. Stand finished first-team all league and Howe was honorable mention.

Stand is currently ranked 19th in Kansas class 4A by the Kansas Golf Coaches Association. The 4A state golf tournament will be played at Hesston Golf Course in Hesston on May 26. Stand tees off at 8:30 a.m.

Howe is homeschooled, but plays for Moscow in the postseason because his parents, Marcus and Stacey Howe, live in the Moscow district. Howe played for Hugoton during the regular season because the Wildcats don’t have their own golf team.

The 1A state golf tournament will be played at the Turkey Creek Golf Course on May 26 in McPherson. Howe tees off at 8:30 a.m.

Fellow Moscow freshman Miles Mueller shot a 111 at the same 1A sub-state at Mariah Hills in Dodge City and finished 26th. Mueller also played for Hugoton during the regular season.

The Hugoton boys’ team finished sixth Tuesday at the sub-state with a team total of 393. Boys’ scores were Stand 85; Daniel Alfaro 97; Jaxon Torres 98; Grant Goode 113; Zane Hermreck 113; and Braxton Hansen 115. All six boys are sophomores.
