The Hugoton High School Class of 2015 graduated Saturday, May 16, in Hugoton. Music was provided by the high school band directed by Ms. amy Freeman. The senior class choir representatives provided music with Director Trevor Waechter and pianist Ms. Angela Heger. Salutatory remarks were given by Kathryn Weaver and Valedictory remarks by Lauren Fox. Mrs. Chelle Leininger was in charge of awards and honors recognition. HHS Principal Mr. Jon Girodat presented the Class and Mr. Don Beesley, president of the board of education, assisted by school board members, accepted the class and awarded the diplomas. Amanda Mills offered the invocation and Michael Baeza gave the benediction.
Scholarships totaling more than $75,000 were awarded to students. The Hugoton Masonic Lodge Scholarship of $250 went to Monica Bustillos, while $1000 each from the Kansas Masonic Lodge went to Mariah Archuleta, Kristan Crawford, Jacqueline Garcia, Sofia Jimenez, Riley Sosa, Edgar Villa, and Takoda Eckert’s was renewed. FCC Montana Beesley Scholarship of $1000 went to Mandy Mills. Mandy also received the $1000 Britta and Olian Thompson Memorial scholarship.
The Larry Seybold Memorial Scholarship of $500 went to Kimberly Cabezas and Amanda Mills. Taylor Fiss, Christian Heger, Amanda Mills, Riley Sosa and Kathryn Weaver received the Chris Concannon Memorial Scholarship of $1000 each. Stevens County Medical Foundation awarded $1000 to Riley Sosa. Taylor Fiss received the $1000 Seaboard Child of Employee Scholarship. Kristan Crawford also received a $1000 Seaboard Scholarship.
Mariah Archuleta, Monica Bustillos, Taylor Fiss, Lauren Fox, Riley Sosa, Jacob Teeter and Kathryn Weaver were awarded the Pheasant Heaven-College Scholarship of $1000 each. Taylor Fiss was awarded the PEO Scholarship of $250. Emmanuel Valles was awarded a $1000 Vocational Scholarship. LMD Club Officers Juan Cruz, Jackie Garcia, Sofia Jimenez, Brissa Ordoñez and Emmanuel Valles each received $200. LMD Club members Estefani Armendariz, Monica Bustillos, Anahi Hernandez, Natasha Irons, Alexandra Lopez and Ana Peña received $150 each. FFA Alumni Scholarships were awarded to Caleb Henry for $500, Mariah Rome for $800 and Jacob Teeter for $750.
Monica Bustillos, Lauren Fox and Amanda Mills each received $750 from the Denise Leonard Medical Education Scholarship. Estefani Armendariz, Cody Guerrero and Larisa Hernandez each received $750 from the Brian Lamberson/Dust Bowl Riders. Corey Mirabal Memorial Scholarship gave $250 each to Mariah Archuleta, Riley Sosa and Kellen Watkins. Leslie Miller, Ana Peña, Michael Baeza, Monica Bustillos, Kathryn Weaver, Riley Sosa and Christian Heger each received $250 from the Knights of Columbus Scholarship. Christian Heger also received the Pioneer Communications Memorial Scholarship. Ana Peña received the $1500 Joseph B. Chillen/Earl B. Williams Scholarship.
Brittney Kolb received $200 from Stevens County 4-H. The Pollyannas awarded $400 each to Kimberly Cabezas, Ana Peña and Riley Sosa. The Patriot Award from Pollyannas of $100 went to Chance Ghumm. Katie Weaver and Sadie Wood each received $2400 from the Stevens County Soil Conservation Scholarship. The Black Hills Energy $1000 Scholarship was awarded to Riley Sosa. Katie Weaver received the $200 Crane Holder Memorial Scholarship. Alexandra Lopez received $100 from the Class of 1952.
Riley Sosa was awarded the $750 Gas Capital Scholarship. The Hershey Family awarded $800 each to Lauren Fox, Leslie Miller, Riley Sosa, Jacob Teeter and Kathryn Weaver. Hugoton First National Bank awarded $250 each to Mariah Archuleta, Sofia Jimenez and Riley Sosa. Monica Bustillos was awarded the $500 Hutton Scholarship. KACRA (Kansas Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers) awarded Katie Weaver $250. The Kiwanis Scholarship of $600 each was awarded to Monica Bustillos, Leslie Miller, Riley Sosa and Jacob Teeter. The Lions Club awarded $300 each to Ulises Armendariz, Lauren Fox and Riley Sosa. Lauren Fox and Sadie Wood each received $500 from Northwest Cotton Growers. Parsons Scholarships of $1000 each were awarded to Mariah Archuleta, Estefani Armendariz, Monica Bustillos, Lauren Fox, Jackie Garcia, Larisa Hernandez, Sofia Jimenez, Ana Peña, Edgar Villa and Kellen Watkins.
Preceptor Delta Lambda Beta Sigma Phi awarded Lauren Fox and Monica Bustillos $250 each. The Antonio Romo Jr. Memorial awarded $500 each to Monica Bustillos, Sayra Chavez, Brissa Ordoñez, Ana Peña and Kathryn Weaver. Taylor Fiss, Ana Peña and Kellen Watkins each received a $500 Rotary Club Scholarship. Stevens County Farm Bureau awarded $500 each to Monica Bustillos, Christian Heger, Sofia Jimenez, Leslie Miller, Riley Sosa and Jacob Teeter. Stevens County Healthcare awarded $1000 to Monica Bustillos. Mariah Archuleta, Monica Bustillos, Kristan Crawford, Taylor Fiss, Lauren Fox, Jackie Garcia and Riley Sosa each received $300 from the Stevens County Hospital Auxiliary. Southwest Pioneer Foundation awarded Riley Sosa and Kathryn Weaver $250 each. Jacob Teeter was awarded $500 from Teeter Irrigation Water Conservation.
College scholarship awardees were Kathryn Weaver – Benedictine College, Academic Scholarship. Attending Fort Hays State University Monica Bustillos – Hays City Silver Award, Academic Opportunity; Kimberly Cabezas – Hays City Silver Award; Jacqueline Garcia – Hays City Silver Award, Academic Opportunity; Leslie Miller – Fort Hays Bronze Award; and Riley Sosa – Hays City Silver Award, Biological Sciences award. Garden City Community College scholarship goes to Ana Peña – Volleyball Scholarship. Jacob Teeter – Presidential Scholarship – Crops and Soil from Hutchinson Community College. Kansas State University awardees were Ulises Armendariz-Parra – Activity Scholarship; Kristan Crawford – Foundation Plus Scholarship; Natasha Irons – Kanco Program; Amanda Mills – Leadership scholarship; and Brissa Ordoñez – activity Scholarship. McPherson College awardees were Michael Baeza and Kellen Watkins both Academic Scholarships and Football scholarships. Seward County Community College presented Camila Gonzalez with – Presidential Books – Tuition Scholarship. Lauren Fox received a Presidential Leadership Scholarship, and dean’s Scholarship from tabor College. Washburn University attendees received Larisa Hernandez – Culver Memorial Scholarship, Finnup Foundation Scholarship; Christian Heger – Finnup Foundation Scholarship; Sofia Jimenez – Finnup Foundation Scholarship; and Edgar Villa – academic Scholarship and Finnup Foundation Scholarship.
