Hugoton’s Blue and Red Classic basketball tournament will also begin Thursday evening. The Lady Eagles will take the court at 6:30 p.m. and the boys will follow at 8:15 p.m. Both games will be played in the West Gym at Hugoton High School.

Rolla High School will host their annual Showcase Basketball Tournament with games starting at 3:30 p.m. Rolla girls will play at 6:30 p.m. and the boys will play at 8:00 p.m.

Hugoton Aglow will meet one last time for 2014 at 7:30 p.m. at the Hutton Building Thursday evening.

This Thanksgiving, Thursday, November 27, Mariah Rome will be dancing in New York City at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Mariah received this once-in-a-lifetime trip by winning the All-American Award this past summer at dance camp. She will be performing for Spirit of America Productions and her group name will be “Varsity Spirit”.

Please join Mariah’s family to cheer on Mariah by turning your TV to NBC from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon Thursday, November 27. It is going to be such a great experience for Mariah. Hugoton is very proud of her accomplishments! Mariah is the daughter of Dave and Lori Rome of Hugoton.

Saturday, November 15, Hugoton’s Senior Center will host a Life Story workshop beginning at 10:00 a.m. Later, at 6:00 p.m., community members are invited for cards and refreshments. Moscow Senior Center will host their monthly Movie Night and pot luck supper Saturday evening, starting at 6:00 p.m. All are welcome!
Sunday, November 16, Hugoton’s First Christian Church will host a Community Thanksgiving Dinner, starting at 12:00 noon at 600 S. Van Buren.

As we head into the festive – and frenzied – holiday season, your calendar will fill up quickly! This weekend will be no exception in Hugoton and the surrounding area.

First up, there is the eleventh annual Pheasant Heaven Calf Fry, Beef Feed and Pig Roast Friday evening, starting at 5:00 p.m. at Great Plains Gas Compression, 210 E. First Street in Hugoton. There will be door prizes and raffles, along with great food and fellowship. Caring Connections will provide childcare for children ages two weeks to 12 years from 5:00 to 11:30 p.m. at their facility two blocks east of the event, 516 NE Avenue. Saturday and Sunday morning, November 8 and 9, you can fuel up for pheasant hunting at the Lions Club Hunters’ Breakfast starting at 5:00 a.m. The meal will be at the 4-H Building at the Stevens County Fairgrounds. An “all you can eat” breakfast will be served buffet style with scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes and coffee or juice. There will also be a shotgun drawing Sunday. Tuesday, November 4 will be the General Election. Contested offices – those with two or more candidates – on the ballot will include U.S. Representative, U.S. Senator, Kansas Governor and Lieutenant Governor, Secretary of State, Attorney General, State Treasurer and Commissioner of Insurance. Uncontested races include State Representative, State Board of Education, District Court Judge District 26 Divisions 1 and 3, Stevens County Commissioner District 1, Moscow Township Clerk, Supreme Court Justices Positions 4 and 6, Court of Appeals Judge Positions 1, 4, 5, 7, 10, 11, 12 and 13. A proposed constitutional amendment will also be included, regarding the licensing, conduct and regulation of charitable “raffles” by nonprofit religion, charitable, fraternal, educational and Veterans organizations.

Hugoton residents will vote at the Memorial Hall, 200 E. Sixth in Hugoton. Moscow residents will vote at the United Methodist Hall, 300 Ransom in Moscow. Polls will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Friday, October 31, many local organizations are pulling out all the stops for a truly “spoooky” evening!

Parents, you are invited to escort your costumed kiddos down Main Street Friday afternoon beginning at 4:30 p.m. for the Spook Parade, sponsored by the Hugoton Area Chamber of Commerce. The route will start at the Chamber Office, at the corner of Seventh and Main. Ghosts, goblins, witches, princesses and ninja turtles will receive plenty of candy to get trick or treating started off right!

Moscow Recreation Commission will host a fun Halloween Carnival in the City Park, starting at 5:00 p.m. There will be games and candy for all ages!

Then you can head to the Stevens County Library for some scary good books – and maybe a treat – at 500 S. Monroe. From there, proceed to Pioneer Manor, 1711 S. Main, to trek down the Manor’s indoor “Main Street” for even more goodies.

There will be two “Trunk or Treat” events this year – one at Assembly of God’s Turnaround parking lot, at Second and Main, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. and one at the United Methodist Church, 828 S. Main, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Bethel Friends Church will host a Harvest Festival in their Education Building, at Eleventh and Jefferson, Friday evening from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Over the weekend, Lambda Psi will host their annual Pumpkin Patch Benefit Arts and Crafts show at the Texas County Activity Center in Guymon, Ok. Saturday, November 1 from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Sunday, November 2 from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. You are also invited to Baker Arts Center, at 624 N. Pershing in Liberal, for their 2014 French Market Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Sunday from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. Tickets are available now at the Center.
