KBI issues official report of weekend’s events

Sheriff Ted Heaton brought in the following report from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation concerning events which occurred Saturday, February 7.

Saturday evening, the Hugoton Police Department was dispatched to a report of a domestic disturbance within Hugoton city limits. Upon arrival, the officer attempted to stop a subject who was leaving the scene.

Felicia Moreland named Cub Master of the Year

The Cimarron River District Boy Scouts of America hosted its annual recognition dinner at the Sublette Community Building Saturday, January 24. The host was Pack 142 with Jerry and Angie Lee as leaders. They set up a very attractive and inviting room and served coffee and tea. The meal was catered by Good Eats and Sweet Treats. The opening prayer was offered by Jake Jacobs of Liberal. The opening was the John Wayne Face the Flag Son with the pledge of Allegiance led by Cub Scouts Stoppel and Moreland. Read More →

EcoDevo considers “Minnow Tank”

The Stevens County Economic Development Board met Tuesday, January 13, 2015 at the Senior Center craft room for their regular monthly meeting.  Present at the meeting were Director Neal Gillespie, Stevens County Commissioner Joe D. Thompson, secretary Ruth Van Horn and board members Josh Morris, Jan Leonard, Ray Hoggatt, Judy Parsons, Mark Crawford, Jack Rowden, Doug Martin and Curtis Crawford.  Also attending the meeting were Jeff Crawford and Hugoton Hermes reporter Ruthie Winget.  Board member Dan Corpening was absent.

January 10, the artworks of several Hugoton Middle School art students were delivered for an upcoming competitive display at the Baker Arts Center in Liberal to compete in what is known as the Western Kansas Scholastics Art Competition. This is a state and national art competition open to all art students in grades seven through twelve offered yearly in southwest Kansas, with other regions including Wichita, Kansas City and other areas in Kansas. Heavy snowfall brings with it numerous accidents

The Stevens County Sheriff’s Department was busy over the weekend with multiple vehicle accidents.

Friday, January 2, 2015, Amanda Munson, age 34, of Moscow, was traveling southbound on Highway 25 in a 2002 Ford Expedition when her vehicle was struck in the left rear by a westbound 2002 GMC pickup driven by Jesus Antonio Cordova Villa, age 22, of Turpin, Ok., that had failed to stop at the stop sign. The Expedition came to a stop in the west ditch and the pickup ended in the south ditch of County Road D. Cordova was transported for his injuries. Both vehicles sustained major damage. Read More →

The Hugoton Middle School eighth grade Lady Eagles started the year with another perfect season, going undefeated for the second year in a row. Team members are Trinity McPhillips, Laney Hoskinson, Ady Gooch, Dallie Hoskinson, Claire Lewis, Brooklynn Harper, Britta Beesley, Jaysa Featherston, JoHanna Rawlins, Caitlin Lewis and Felicia Beard. Coaches are Nick Rodriguez and Jill Skinner.

Tom and Patty Lahey showed off The Hermes in the Caribbean, where they reunited – somewhat unexpectedly – with a couple of acquaintances from Germany who were also visiting Cozumel the very same day: Joachim and Ellen Wagner. The Wagners served as sponsors for the student exchange between Moscow and Rotenburg, Germany for 15 years.

Congressman Huelskamp leads Town Hall meeting

Congressman Tim Huelskamp conducted a Town Hall meeting Thursday afternoon, December 18, 2014 at the Stevens County Senior Center.

He began the meeting by stating he thought this past week had been a very good week for Congress.  Tim commented he had served with the VA committee for the past four years. He said he has learned that the VA has been  failing in providing for  a lot of Veterans’ needs. In July his committee helped to pass a major reform that if a Veteran lives more than 40 miles from a VA facility or has been waiting more than 30 days for care, the Veteran can pick a local doctor or hospital.  Veterans will receive a Veteran’s Choice card in order to do this.  This reform will only be good for two years. Christmas Eve services listed

Hugoton

The First Church of God, located at 801 W. City Limits invites the community to join them for a Christmas Eve Candlelight Communion Service to celebrate the reason for the season. The service begins at 6:30 p.m.

The Hugoton United Methodist Church will have Christmas Eve Worship at 7:00 p.m.

First Christian Church has planned a candlelight service at 6:00 p.m. Christmas Eve.

Bethel Friends Church will offer Christmas Eve Services at 6:00 p.m.

St. Helen Catholic Church’s Christmas Eve Mass will start at 7:00 p.m. and Christmas Morning Mass will be at 11:00 a.m.

Sovereign Redeemer Church plans to have a Christmas Eve Candlelight Service at 5:00 p.m.

Moscow

Everyone is invited to Moscow Baptist Church for a Candlelight Service and Cantata Christmas Eve at 7:00 p.m. Cookies and punch will be served in the fellowship hall following the service. Come meet the new preacher Sean Schrader and his wife Stephanie.

The Moscow UMC invites the community to the Christmas Eve Candlelight Service which begins at 6:30 p.m.
