The Hugoton Cross Country team had an exciting day at the Prairie Ridge XC Park in Hutchinson, highlighted by freshman Kenzi Pike’s performance that earned her a trip to the State Championship Meet.
Pike had an outstanding run, shaving an impressive 20 seconds off her previous personal record. She completed the challenging 5K course in 20:40.70, finishing sixth overall in the girls’ race. Despite rainy weather and muddy conditions, Kenzi looked strong and confident throughout the race, clearly enjoying every stride.
“Kenzi ran a phenomenal race,” said Coach Ferguson. “We have no seniors, so all of these runners will be back at it next season. Proud day to be a Hugoton Eagle! This has been a great group of kids to coach this season. We’ve worked really hard to get to this point, and I’m excited to see what the future holds for this entire team. I’m super excited to watch Kenzi dominate at the State meet November 1.”
On the boys’ side, the Eagles gave it everything they had, but came up just short. Leading the way was Brandon Gomez, who placed eighteenth overall with a time of 18:12.10. The Hugoton boys’ lineup
included Brandon Gomez, Bannor Stang, Oziel Rodriguez, Sergio Tinoco, and Blake Salmans—a young and determined group showing plenty of potential for the seasons ahead.
The 5K races took place on a scenic yet slippery course at Prairie Ridge, offering great viewing spots for fans and families who came to cheer. The steady rain made for a few muddy challenges, but the Eagles handled the conditions with grit and enthusiasm.
With Pike heading to State November 1, the future looks bright for Hugoton Cross Country. One thing is certain—this young team is just getting started.
Go Eagles!
