Kayleigh Flores wins statewide poster contest

Winners of two Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day statewide contests have been announced as part of the national safety campaign Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day. For the poster contest – Kendall Rogers of Cunningham, Kayleigh Flores of Moscow and Reagan de Koning of Axtell are the statewide winners. Each student was first selected as a regional winner and received a bicycle and a helmet donated by Safe Kids Kansas at presentations at their schools.

Kayleigh Flores is a student at Heritage Christian Academy in Hugoton in the eight to ten year old division. She was awarded her prize of a shiny new bicycle and bike helmet at HCA Friday, October 9.

In addition to winning a bicycle and bike helmet, Kayleigh’s poster was selected as the best in the state in her age category and her family wins a one night stay at the Great Wolf Lodge water park in Kansas City and a $50 gift card from the Petroleum Marketers and Convenience Store Association of Kansas.

For the video contest – Siera Hartwell, Lauren Gabriel, Justin Toumberlin and Nate Herries from the Video Production class at Eudora High School won first place. The class will receive their choice of an iPad mini, GoPro video camera or Apple Watch along with a $500 donation to the school.

Students from Wichita East High School’s Film Studies class captured second place and Jalen Gifford, representing Dodge City High School, placed third in the video contest. Each will receive one of the remaining prizes listed above. A total of 170 entries from teens in 21 Kansas schools participated.

Organizations working together on this safety campaign include the Kansas Department of Transportation, Kansas Turnpike Authority, Kansas Highway Patrol, AAA of Kansas, Kansas Contractors Association, Kansas Family Partnership, Kansas Traffic Safety Resource Office, Federal Highway Administration and the Kansas Society of Professional Engineers.
